President Obama is making an effort to reach out the South Asian community through his participation in their religious ceremonies. This effort has not been seen in a nation that intends to keep church and state separated. It may be possible that Obama can sense that America is a state of multiple religions that he believes should be acknowledged in the public sphere. Many devout Hindus identify themselves as being "Hindu-American" rather than being Indian-American. For this reason, it is clear that religion is important and Obama is smart in realizing this.
